Pre Production- Filming - 06/04/15

This is a photo of one of our main actors Josh, here he is going through his lines with team member and actor  Callum on set.

These are two members of the opposing team who were from Norway, they understood very little English and were extremely drunk and hard to work with!

This is Kirsty and I whilst filming the match, we were trying to assemble the camera then it became apparent that the base plate that we had been issues with was not the correct one to fit the tripod!

This is our main actor Josh having a go on the camera! With team members Millie and Yvienne. It was a very windy day, so all footage will be a challenge to edit with reducing the sound.

Overall, the filming process was quite successful in the sense that we got all of the desired footage, although, factors that we could not change such as the lighting conditions and weather proved quite challenging.

We worked well together ensuring that each of us had a specified role within each session. Although we did have some setbacks... One being having a drunk rug by team to work with. One in particular kept grabbing my face whilst trying to film.

Pre production-Film preparation- Creating film posters- 17/02/2015

Although we have not yet completed the casting process, I recently asked to meet with a member of Kents rugby team, I got a selection of images, and edited them using Photoshop and illustrator, this is just to provide some shot inspiration or help us with character profiling, it also helped to improve my camera and editing techniques.

Pre production-My Allocated Part Of The Treatment- Duration- 17/02/2015

Pre production- Meeting minutes- 11/02/2015

These are the brief notes that we made during our meeting, we have put the treatment into various sections, so that each group member is assigned a part, we will write it up individually, then we will go back to one another and pass our part of the treatment on to another member of the group to proof read it and improve/change anything they believe to be necessary.

Pre production-Consent form- Currently incomplete- 10/02/2015

This is the form that we will have to hand out to the actors that we choose for our film, and any extras that may be involved in the production process.

Pre production- Checklist for filming projects involving human participation - Status (Incomplete)- 10/02/2015

This is a form that us as a group need to fill out, we will the know whether our project needs to be submitted for a faculty report, we must do this before filming commences, so hopefully we can do this tomorrow (11/02/2015) so that we can continue to move forward with the production of our short film.

Pre production- Location- Setback- 10/02/2015

We were going to photograph some of our locations in the next few days, although, you have to apply for permission at the gym, which is one week notice. I am going to go to the gym tomorrow morning (11/02/2015) so that I can apply for the permission, then hopefully get images of our locations within project week which is next week, starting on Monday 16th February, through to Friday 20th. Here are some images of the gym that I retrieved from the Kent website, and Google.

Pre production-Target Audience- BBC3- 10/02/2015

Target audience researh

I looked at various other BBC3 dramas, I have copied a few links of the ones I watched...

  • http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b051gfft/crims-episode-5
  • http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b051dkrz/excluded-kicked-out-of-school-episode-3
  • http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b05203ld/abortion-irelands-guilty-secret

I have realised from watching these dramas that they all...

  • Are modern
  • Are real
  • Dramatic
  • Show modern day problems that their target audience may encounter and can relate too.
  • Speak modern 'slang' like language
I believe this is partly the reason that they get such a largely positive response form their target audiences, audiences are able to relate to the characters within the dramas, they are able to model themselves on them, and it almost works as advice, or 'hope' as such seeing the charters on the TV show overcome the problems that their target audience may be, or may have faced in the past.

Pre production-Film Title- Relentless- 09/02/2015

After a lot of time and thought, we have decided to name our film 'RELENTLESS.

Relentless: (Adjunceasingly intense and persistance. Harsh or inflexible.

Reasons why it is a suitable title for our short production:

  •  It almost tells you about the struggle of reaching your goal in one word.
  • It has connotations with determination which is a key quality needed to be involved in sport.
  • It also has connotations with 'forward thinking' which is again another desired sporting characteristic.
  • It also has relevance to his relationship issues at the same time, as he is somewhat 'relentless' in a sense that he keeps fighting for his relationship.

Pre production-Storyboarding- Pixton- 04/02/2015

I tried using this online story boarding software called 'Pixton', this is a possible software we will use when story boarding for our short film. The scene I have created is in a gym setting (which is where our actual film will be set). It also has our protagonist the sportsman, featuring his girlfriend, who will also be a big part in the central part of the film. *PLEASE NOTE this is not our actual script, it's just a few words that mimic the mood of the climax of our film*

Pre production-Scripting- Shorthand codes- 04/02/2015

Pre production-Influences- Steven Moffat (Interview)- 04/02/2015

Today we watched a short interview with the writer of the very famous Doctor Who, and various other TV dramas, his approach to writing will help inspire us when writing our story, one piece of advice he gave to amatuer writers is to write about something you love, and something you are passionate about. Being such a large diverse group, it is quite hard to find common ground in a sense that we all are equally as passionate about, although, we are all a creative team as we study a creative subject, therefore we all have a passion in that sense, so as long as we have a good story line, I'm sure we will all be able to learn to love what we are working on, and have a great outcome.

Pre production-Influences- Atonement-04/02/2015

We mainly looked at Atonement as an influence for sound, although I am unable to opening title sequence of the film, i will describe it.
The both digetic and non-digetic sound of the typewriter is used as the titles are imprinted onto the screen. It is also used as a backing track with added beats etc as the scene gets more dramatic. We could somehow translate this idea into our own work but with a different tool/object that would be relevant to our genre and the current scene.

Pre production-Storyboarding- Taxi Driver- 04/02/2015

I watched this video of a film running alongside it's storyboards, it's quite interesting as it almost identical to the storyboards, it gives us an idea of how we as a team need to structure our storyboard, but not only that, it taught me a lot I didn't know about story-boarding, such as you can:

Use arrows to show the direction of movement within the storyboard.

Use boxes (a & b) to shoe the movement of the camera during a close up.

You can use lines in an Arial view to illustrate camera paths and positioning of different things that may be in a busy/large place.

Pre production-Next steps- Writing a treatment and casting- 02/02/2015

Pre production-Character profiles- Boxer- 02/02/2015

Based on me research I created a profile of a male who fits the specification of having dark hair, this is just an image that we can use as inspiration throughout the casting process of what the male could look like.

Pre production-Casting- Building Character profiles- 02/02/2015

I created a short online survey using online resource survey monkey, This is aimed at our target market of older teens and young adults, I distributed the survey via popular social network Facebook. The survey is so that I can see what our audience expect the appearance to be of a 'Male Boxer', this way we can create a character profile before casting in order to cast based upon what the audience want to see, that way our film will have a higher success rate. Here are my results:

It has become apparent from my results that 100% of people that answered would want to see a male with dark hair, they would also prefer him to be over 5'5 in height. The majority prefer 5'9+ although, we must still respect the minorities opinion and make sure he isn't to tall as some people would prefer him to be 5'8 and under.

Pre production-Influences- 'Nothing Is Impossible'- 02/02/2015

Although it doesn't really follow a narrative structure, the film compiles a great deal of amazing sporting shots, this will help us in the opening sequence of our film where we want a variety of shots of sporting activities, the short snappiness of the shots makes it gripping, And the slow motion edited shots make it have an emotional aspect to the piece, it makes the audience see the hard work that goes into sport and the adrenaline rubs off on them, making the film more gripping and in turn gain a better response.

Pre production-Influences- Awake- 02/02/2015

I don't like the storyline, although the continuous narration without him speaking in person works quite well and makes the film gripping, we could use this as an idea for our short film. The shots are good to, a wide range of angles, non static, and static work well together, the lighting is also good and helps with the mood. The score is simplistic yet creates suspense, this is definitely something that we need to translate into our own work.

Pre production-Influences- "My shoes"- 02/02/2015

This film is about a young boy who is living in poverty or neglect, he has to walk around in untidy clothes, he feels jealousy when the young boy who sits by him has better shoes than him, although the boy then gets picked up by his parent/carer in a wheelchair, While the boy in the tatty shoes is running around jumping and playing, i believe the moral is, be yourself and not to wish you could have someone elses life, although it may seem idealistic on first impressions, you don't know the inns and outs and should not judge.

Pre production-Influences- Existing films analysis- 02/02/2015

I analysed the opening two minutes (opening title sequence)  of the film 'Lilo & Stitch', this enabled me to get an understanding of the types of shots they use to open a film, what titles are used and the different aspects of sound. This will help myself and the others on my team when constructing our treatment and throughout the ongoing production process.

Pre production-Influences- Drama- 02/02/2015

Here is a small compilation I made of various recent successful films, one aspect they all have in common is drama, they are very dramatic and all have a profound clear story line, it is important that our film is constructed clearly and has a definite three part structure with a beginning, middle and an end, so that the audience can follow it attentively without confusion.

Pre production-Target Market research- Survey 02/02/2015

After identifying our target market as individuals in their late teens and older, i decided to create a survey in order to gain some understanding of what the audience for our chosen genre 'Drama' would expect and like in a film. This should help myself and my production team to finalise an idea tailored to our audiences wants and needs. I used Survey Monkey to create an online questionnaire and distributed it via the social networking site Facebook. 54 people were asked to participate, and 50 people did so. Here are some pie charts outlining my results.

Just 10% of the audience believed two characters to be enough for the main film, therefore i will go with the majority and ensure there are more than two characters present throughout the film. Although we will not exceed ten, as we still want to respect the minorities opinion.

60%, so just over half like the idea of the story telling a tale of friendship, so we believe that friendship, relationships or relationships between family members should be a key part in our 'drama' film.

'Adult drama' meaning something which children may not be able to understand at a young age, so serious life situations such as illness, death, marriage issues or breakdown. We believe that a major adult event should occur in our film, which will be the main part, this will be the backbone of the film. We will respect the minorities opinion again, by not making the drama to harsh or horrific, as we must stay inside the genre conventions of drama.

80% of the people questioned said they wanted the story to be about family issues, we believe they choose this because it would be a story line that they may find easier to relate too. We will therefore now include some sort of family relationship/setting in our film.

The answer speaks for itself, 100% want the film to be realistic, therefore we will not have any fantasy or make believe aspect so to speak.
